Breakthrough Solution for Converged Logical and Physical Access Control
Leveraged in Government Systems and Facilities
Veridt Intelligent Credential Readers Used for Implementation of Converged Architecture
Middleton, Wisconsin, January 19, 2010
Veridt, the innovator in credential reader designs and its partner CoreStreet, the leader in credential validation solutions, today announced a converged logical and physical access control solution based on Personal Identity Verification (PIV) and PIV-Interoperable (PIV-I) credentials.
Funded in part by the General Services Administration, CertiPath—the trusted credentialing authority for aviation, aerospace and defense organizations—was tapped to oversee the implementation of a system that could overcome today’s fragmented, expensive and vulnerable approaches to managing physical and logical identity verification and access control, as well as showcase a converged solution conforming to the principles of HSPD-12, FIPS 201 and SP 800-116.
The solution implemented at the offices of Exostar—the leading provider of collaboration solutions for the world’s largest A & D manufacturers and their 40,000 supply chain partners—uses an augmentation approach to PIV-enable existing PACS systems. Intelligent credential readers from Veridt are used to capture the information from employees and visitors alike, and work in conjunction with the CoreStreet FIPS-201 F5 solution to verify the identity and interface to the PACS system.
“Working together with partners CertiPath and Veridt allowed us to implement a showcase environment for a converged security solution based on the smart credentials now in the hands of hundreds of thousands of Federal government employees and contractors,” said Chris Broderick, CEO, CoreStreet. “The integrated solution combines products from all three of our product lines, the CoreStreet Validation Suite, the CoreStreet PIVMAN Suite and the CoreStreet FIPS-201 F5 Suite.”
Furthermore, the architecture and solution implemented allows for federated access control by leveraging the U.S. Federal Bridge to validate inter-agency trust, and extends outside the government space through cross-certification with bridges from CertiPath for the defense and aerospace industries, from Safe Bio-Pharma for the biopharmaceutical and healthcare industries and from HEBCA for the education sector.
“The implementation of the federated access control solution with Veridt and CoreStreet products showcases the possibilities for all Government agencies rolling out their PIV credentials,” said Martin Janiak, President, Veridt. “Secure converged access control is no longer a faraway dream but a practical reality!”
“Working closely with both CoreStreet and Veridt allowed us to deliver a practical implementation of our federated architecture,” said Jeff Nigriny, President, CertiPath. “The breakthrough solution for converged security will be demonstrated at our upcoming Open House.”
Issued in 2004, Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) requires that all federal employees and contractors be issued a PIV card, a smart card with contact and contactless interfaces to be used as their identity credential for both logical access to information systems and physical access to facilities. Special Publication 800-116, as published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in November 2008, covers recommendations for the use of PIV credentials in Physical Access Control Systems (PACS).
