Port of Houston Utilizing Veridt Biometric ID Card Readers | |
Houston, TX (May 7, 2007)Veridt, a leading provider of Applied Biometric Technology, announced today that the Port of Houston has selected Veridt's ruggedized GuardDog integrated biometric reader in upgrading the Port's security infrastructure to include fingerprint ID for perimeter access. Because Veridt core designs are small, compact and ruggedized, they are ideal for operation in adverse harsh environments. These designs have been proven in mission-critical field operations in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific. Their ability to survive these catastrophic weather conditions have demonstrated their capability for use in the Maritime Security environment. Deployment of Veridt readers commenced in December 2006 and will continue throughout the port complex with major projects at the North Turning Basin, Barbours Cut Terminal and the state-of-the-art terminal complex at the Bayport Container Facility. The Port of Houston is a 25-mile-long complex of diversified public and private facilities located just a few hours sailing time from the Gulf of Mexico. The port is ranked first in the United States in foreign waterborne tonnage, second in the US in total tonnage, and tenth in the world in total tonnage. The Port of Houston is made up of the Port of Houston Authority and the 150-plus private industrial companies along the Houston Ship Channel. More than 200 million tons of cargo moved through the Port of Houston in 2006. A total of 7,550 vessel calls were recorded at the Port of Houston during the year 2006.
